The Bassam Batik Loose-Fit Kaftan (Boubou) is a handcrafted tribute to one of Africa’s most enduring cultural vessels the long-neck gourd, traditionally used for carrying water, storing food, and accompanying sacred rituals across generations. More than a functional object, the gourd represents fertility, continuity, and communal life.

This symbolism is boldly centered within the fabric design, framed by flowing lines inspired by coconut fronds and oil palm leaves two vital elements deeply rooted in African ecology, economy, and daily life. The result is a garment that tells a layered story of nourishment, resilience, and heritage.

Each kaftan is hand-dyed in Grand-Bassam, Côte d’Ivoire, ensuring that no two pieces are exactly alike. Subtle variations in shade and motif placement celebrate the authenticity of traditional batik craftsmanship.

Design & Silhouette

This piece is designed as a loose-fit West African boubou, intentionally oversized and never body-hugging. The silhouette allows for airflow, movement, and graceful drape, making it both ceremonial and effortlessly wearable.

The kaftan features a partial side seam construction, stitched from the base of the armhole down to the hem. This creates a subtle side flap opening of approximately 6–7 cm, adding comfort and fluidity. Sleeves are not sewn separately; instead, arm openings are cut directly into the kaftan shape, preserving its traditional form.

A classic shirt collar with a short front placket and two functional buttons adds structure and versatility without compromising the garment’s relaxed elegance.
